What are you ‘giving up’ for Lent?

We are almost into the season of Lent and it is worth reminding ourselves that it is a significant part of the church's journey leading to Christ's suffering and triumph in Holy Week.Traditionally there are three disciplines associated with the 40 days Lenten preparation; fasting, alms giving and prayer.

The first two, fasting and alms giving are closely connected. Our sharing with those in need should be done cheerfully and not grudgingly, secretly and not for the praise of others. It teaches that what one saves through fasting and abstinence should not be kept for other times but should be given away to those in need. Like the widow in the gospel, the value of our alms giving is not measured according to the numbers printed on the money nor the size of the wallet but on the thoughts and intentions which prompt the giving.

Lent is not without its challenges, partly because our shopping and consumer culture is inherently hostile to anything like a Lenten practice.

May this Lent for you be a challenging one as you choose to deny yourself and draw closer to Jesus.
