This weeks Gospel reading comes from Matthew 16, and it contains those famous words from Jesus: ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’

Denying ourselves and taking up our cross means different things for different people: What does it mean for us here in New Zealand?

In some countries the cost of following Jesus may mean rejection by your families and friends. For some it may mean your life or property being in danger. I don’t know about you, but when I hear stories of sacrifice, endurance and suffering for following Jesus, I feel rather light-weight!

The costs of denying yourself for us are different. The sacrifices that we are called to make in responding to Jesus are often small and unseen rather than large and dramatic.

I laughed to myself when I read this, this week: “Everyone wants to change the world but nobody wants to help mum wash the dishes.”

I wonder sometimes whether we spend too much time worrying about seeing the world changed for God on a large scale, rather than in small increments. The reality for us is that our faith will grow as we seek to be obedient in the smaller decisions, when we choose to serve, or put others needs before ours. It’s not particularly glamorous, but it might just be where Jesus is leading us.

How might Jesus be asking you to follow him this week?

Have a great week,

Tim Bustin
