Mission and outreach commitee |
|
Mission and outreach is something we value at Waikanae Anglican Parish, and as such, we have a great committee chaired by Don Mathieson as our Parish mission motivator to ensure things get done!!
Committee functions
The functions of the Commitee are:
- to keep the parish's part in the mission of the church beyond Waikanae under review , and to assess priorities with constant changes occurring and fresh opportunities arising
- to support our parish missioin partners with financial assistance for their identified needs. These are listed below.
- to raise mission consciousness in the congregations, stimulating prayer, membership of NZCMS, involvement in SOMA,knowledge of the world mission scene, support for the work of the Barnabas Fund and consideration by individual parishioners of God's possible calling on their lives to offer themselves as labourers in the harvest field.
- to apportion available funds among the Anglican Missions Board and the parish's associate mission partners.
What does the missions and outreach committee do?
- The Committee organises theme evenings. In recent times, for example, there have been a Middle East evening, an African evening, a Pacific evening and a bring and share meal to raise funds to send to Barnabas Fund for relief work in Zimbabwe. The Committee has also organised(and advertised widely beyond the parish) talks by Dr Patrick Sookhdeo on aspects of modern Islam.
- In the week after Easter 2009 the Committee is organising a Mission and ministry fair(along the lines of the 2004 fair, held in conjunction with the 40 Days of Purpose campaign).
- During 2008 the parish the parish has so far sent $8,500 to the Anglican Missions Board. The total for the calendar year will be $9,000 a pleasing increase over the $6,000 sent in 2007 and previous years.
- The Committee meets at approximately 6 week intervals
Membership
As at December 2008, the committees members are:
- Don Mathieson [Convenor- Parish Mission Motivator]
- Deirdre Whitcombe
- Ginny Higgins
- John West
- Sally Mathieson [who is also the secretary of the DOMG (Diocesan Mission Group Committee for the Diocese of Wellington)].
We could never have too many members. Woundn't it be great to have a representative from each congregation supporting this wonderful work? Perhaps this is something you might like to consider?
Our parish mission partners
The parish mission partners are:
- Simon and Annie Pyatt, working in theological education at present with the New Tribes Mission.
- Two other couples are engaged in work overseas but we do not want to disclose details.
