core group responsibilities

Core Groups are appointed (between 3 and 10) by each congregation (together with the relevant Clergyperson) and:

  • Meet monthly with a Priest or a Deacon present representing the Vicar
  • One member of each Core Group will be nominated as a member of the Pastoral Care Committee
  • At least one member of each Core Group will be nominated and seconded as a member of the Vestry and elected at the Parish AGM

The Core Groups are to:

  • To seek the Holy Spirit’s direction for all their work
  • To intentionally implement the Vision, Mission, and Values of the parish as they apply to their congregation.
  • To maintain accountability to the Vestry under whose authority they function.

Core Groups are responsible for

  • Outworking the Mission, Vision, and Values of the parish
  • Developing the pastoral care team
  • Developing an evangelistic strategy
  • Creating fellowship events that mature the friendships within their congregation
  • Outworking the Vestry’s Yearly Parish Plan
  • Resourcing the children’s and youth programmes with prayer and practical support
  • Caring for Lay Ministers and Worship Assistants

Note: The Vicar/Clergyperson overseeing a congregation is responsible for the service content and format and the management of any music/worship teams/choirs (Dioscesan Manual, page 79).

In the Parish of Waikanae we look for Core Group Members who:

  • Are active in their congregations
  • Are available to take part in the Core Group meetings for at least 12 months
  • Support the Lay Ministers and Worship Assistants for their congregation
  • Are able to help to create fellowship events that nurture the friendships within their congregation
  • Support their Pastoral Team with prayer and encouragement
  • Lead the parish by word and example in their daily lives
  • Understand and help work out the parish Mission, Vision, and Values as agreed by the Vestry from time to time
  • Are able to take concerns from their congregation to their Core Group and articulate these. Can function in a group and participate in group discussion.
